My 1963 Enterprise is in tiptop condition and can carry my weekend camping gear (if I stay upright) whilst moving along at a good clip. I have a question though; what will be the difference be (sails, mast, boom etc)when she is in racing or cruising mode?
Hi there, Not quite sure what your asking here, but if you are carrying a lot of extra weight on the boat then it might be a good idea to lift up the centreboard slightly even when going up wind. The extra weight causes the boat to sit lower in the water which effectively increases the size of the centreboard thereby increasing the possiblity of capsizing! Most people tend to assume that additional weight on board makes the boat more stable but the reality is quite the opposite. Even when the additional weight is movable i.e. extra crew, it still has the adverse effect of increasing draught and thereby increasing resistance to sideways movement of the boat and decreasing speed which in turn increases the heeling force of the wind in the sails.
hope this helps.
